What an invisible character is

An invisible character is a real character that draws nothing. To an app it is text, so a field that refuses to be empty will accept it, while to a reader it looks blank. Unicode has several kinds, and they behave differently:

  • Letters that draw nothing: the Hangul filler (U+3164) and its halfwidth version (U+FFA0) belong to the Korean alphabet, where they fill an empty slot in a syllable. Unicode classes them as letters, not spaces.
  • Blank symbols: the braille pattern blank (U+2800) is the empty cell of the braille block, classed as a symbol.
  • Spaces: no-break, em, figure, thin and ideographic spaces have a width but no ink.
  • Zero width characters: the zero width space (U+200B) and word joiner (U+2060) take no room at all. They control line breaks.

Why the Hangul filler is the usual choice

Many apps remove ordinary spaces at the start and end of a name or message, so a name made of spaces ends up empty and is refused. A character Unicode classes as a letter is less likely to be stripped that way. Apps can still block any of them, so if one does not work, try the braille blank, then a zero width space.

Common uses

  • A blank message or an empty-looking comment.
  • An invisible or blank name in a game or a group chat, where the rules allow it.
  • Extra spacing or line breaks in a bio, where the app removes normal blank lines.

Hidden characters in your own text

Invisible characters also sneak into text copied from websites, chats and PDFs, and then break a password, a search, a spreadsheet formula or a line of code. Paste the text into the checker to see every hidden character as a tag, then remove them all and copy the clean text in one tap. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions

How do I copy an invisible character?

Press Copy invisible character at the top. It copies one Hangul filler (U+3164). To copy several, set How many and press Copy.

How do I send a blank message?

Copy an invisible character, paste it into the message box and send. If the app refuses it, try the braille pattern blank from the list.

Can I have an invisible name?

Some games and apps accept a name made of an invisible character, others block it. The rules differ per app, so try it and keep a visible name ready.

Is the zero width space really empty?

It takes no width, but it is still a character. It is used to allow a line break inside long words or links.

How do I remove invisible characters from text?

Paste the text into the checker below the list. It tags each hidden character; press Remove invisible characters and copy to get clean text.
