Text hearts or emoji hearts?
A text heart such as ♡ or ♥ is a character like a letter. It takes the color of the text around it, so it is black in a black sentence and pink in a pink one, and it looks much the same on every phone. A heart emoji such as 💖 or 💙 carries its own color and each phone maker draws it in its own style.
The red heart ❤ sits between the two. It started as a text symbol (U+2764), and many apps show it as the red emoji. Two invisible helpers decide which version you get: adding U+FE0F asks for the emoji, adding U+FE0E asks for the plain text heart. The ❤︎ and ♡︎ in the first group already carry the text helper, which is why they stay flat.

- Bios and names: one small heart on each side of a name (♡ name ♡) or a soft combo such as ୨♡୧.
- Messages and captions: a heart line as a divider between parts of a long caption.

How do I type a heart symbol?
The quickest way is to tap a heart on this page to copy it, then paste it. On a phone the emoji keyboard also has hearts, but it has no plain text hearts such as ♡ or ❥.
What is the difference between ♡ and ♥?
♡ is the white (outline) heart suit from playing cards and ♥ is the black (filled) one. Both are text characters, so they take the color of the text.
Why does my heart turn into a red emoji?
The app shows ❤ as an emoji. Copy ❤︎ from the first group instead: it carries a hidden instruction asking for the flat text version. Not every app follows it.
