Discord colored text
Discord can show coloured text inside an ansi code block. Type below, select a word, pick a colour, then copy and paste the result into a Discord message.
Where Discord accepts fancy fonts
- Display name and server nicknames: yes, styled text works here. This is what people see in chat.
- Username: no. Discord usernames only allow lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
- About me, status and messages: yes.
- Server and channel names: server names accept it; channel names are more limited.
Discord's own formatting (no copy and paste needed)
In messages, Discord turns a few symbols into real formatting, which is easier for screen readers than Unicode styles:
| Type | Result |
|---|---|
**bold** | bold |
*italic* | italic |
__underline__ | underline |
~~strikethrough~~ | |
||spoiler|| | hidden until clicked |
`code` | code |
> quote | a quote block |
# Heading | a large heading line |
That formatting only works inside Discord messages. For your name, bio or anything you paste elsewhere, use the Unicode styles above.
Good picks for Discord
Gothic and bold gothic suit gaming servers; black squares and letter tiles stand out in the member list; slightly cursed glitch text works for spooky or meme servers. Heavy glitch text can overlap the lines around it, so some servers remove it.
How these Discord fonts are made
Discord fonts: what Unicode block each style is built from, and which letters stay plain.
| Style | Example | Built from | Letters left plain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Letter tiles | ๐ฉโ๐ฎโ๐ธโ๐จโ๐ดโ๐ทโ๐ฉโ โ๐ณโ๐ฆโ๐ฒโ๐ช | Regional Indicator Symbols, with a hidden space so pairs do not turn into flags | none |
| Typewriter | ๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ | Mathematical Monospace, the typewriter set, with monospace digits | none |
