Where styled text can go on Facebook

PlaceWorth trying?Notes
Posts on your profileYesGood for a bold heading line above a longer post.
Comments and repliesYesOne styled word is usually enough to stand out.
Intro (the short bio on your profile)YesA styled first line, the rest plain, reads best.
Page postsYesKeep prices, dates and links in plain text.
Profile nameNot recommendedFacebook's name policy generally does not allow symbols or unusual characters, so a styled name may be rejected.

Facebook offers little formatting in ordinary posts and comments, which is why people paste Unicode styles instead. These are regular characters, so Facebook stores and shows them like any other text. How they look on someone else's screen depends on the fonts their phone or computer has.

Styles that suit Facebook

A news feed is busy, so the clean styles work hardest here. Bold sans (๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€) looks closest to Facebook's own lettering and makes a short heading pop. Italic sans (๐˜•๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ๐˜ด) is good for a quote or a side note. Bold cursive (๐“๐“ฎ๐”€๐“ผ) adds a personal touch to a birthday wish or an announcement. Strikethrough (Nฬถeฬถwฬถsฬถ) and underline suit a playful correction or a single key word.

Post ideas

  • A bold title line for an event, a sale or a club update.
  • An italic quote at the top of a memory post.
  • A cursive name in a birthday or anniversary message.
  • A struck-through word for a joke: "I am sฬถtฬถrฬถeฬถsฬถsฬถeฬถdฬถ fine."

Need a few dividers or bullets as well? The symbols page has arrows, stars and check marks to drop between lines.

Things to keep plain

Facebook search, and search engines in general, treat styled letters as different characters from normal ones. A business name, a product or a hashtag written only in a fancy style is much harder to find, so write it in plain letters at least once. Screen readers may skip styled words or read them one character at a time, which matters for anyone using one to follow your Page.

Questions

How do I change my font on Facebook?

Posts and comments on Facebook come without a font menu. Write your words in the box above, tap the card you like, then paste the copied text into a post, a comment or your Intro.

Can I use a fancy font in my Facebook name?

It is not a good idea. Facebook's name policy generally does not allow symbols or unusual characters, so a styled name may be rejected. Use the styles in posts and your Intro instead.

How do I write in bold on Facebook?

Copy the Bold (sans) or Bold (serif) card on this page and paste it where you want it. The bold comes from the characters themselves, so it stays when the post is shared.

Why do some people see boxes instead of my text?

Their device lacks a font with those characters. Bold, italic and cursive show on most modern phones and computers; rarer styles are more likely to fail on older devices.

Do Facebook fonts work in Messenger?

They paste as ordinary text, so you can send them in a message. The look depends on the reader's device.
